Best story Georgia on my mind

On a night when Cristiano Ronaldo sulked, Georgia celebrated.

This is the best day in the lives of all Georgians, cried star man Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.

Theyd beaten Portugal and gone through to the last 16 as one of the best third-placed teams.

It was a scene of pure ecstasy but nothing to what it was like back in their capital, Tbilisi.

Better known for rugby than football, the troubled country from the Caucasus are making their debut in a major football tournament as outsiders among the outsiders.

After giving Turkey a scare in their first game, they battled for a point against Czechia and now this.

Kvaratskhelia, coveted by many top clubs, scored after two minutes to remind us why hes known as Kvaradona back in Napoli.

And Georges Mikautadze slotted the clinching penalty in the second half to take an improbable lead in the Golden Boot race.

Portugal, who made nine changes, were already through, but Ronaldo fired blanks again.

And nothing should detract from a fighting and deserved victory by the minnows.

CR7 also kicked a water bottle, got booked and was subbed.

It was not his night but it was an historic one for Georgia.

Its the biggest underdog story in the Euros since Wales reached the semi-final in 2016.

Best team Spain look set to reign again

The best Spain team since 2012, is what Spanish football expert Guillem Ballague calls them.

The best performance since Ive been in charge, is what Spain coach Luis de la Fuente said of their 1-0 win over Italy.

For a bit of perspective, Italy coach Luciano Spalletti said: Spain has played the best football for the longest time now.

They have looked head and shoulders above anyone else in Germany so far so theres widespread agreement.

Where England have stunk out every stadium, the Spanish maestros have lit them up.

They called it a Group of Death with Italy and Croatia, but Spain were the matadors.

They could afford to make 10 changes for their final game and still win comfortably against Albania.

Indeed, some pundits are saying they have two teams who could beat most countries in Germany.

Thats how impressive their second stringers looked.

They have minnows Georgia next but may need all the depth they can muster after that as theyre in the tougher half of the draw.

Likely quarter-final opponents are Germany before either France, Belgium or Portugal in the semi.

If they get past that lot, they should win it.

They just have so many talented youngsters that are a joy to watch.

Lamine Yamal has attracted the headlines and his manager even suggested hed been touched by Gods wand.

But on the other flank Nico Williams has been almost as divine.

Against Italy, he said the dressing room rose to applaud him after the match.

One Spanish newspaper called the wing pair: Two Ferraris against Italy. And that was before the game.

Elsewhere, David Raya has looked solid in goal and Jesus Navas can still deliver a precise cross at the ripe old age of 38 from right back.

The likes of Danny Olmo and Ferran Torres have also shown their wares, while the long-overlooked Fabian Ruiz scored one of the goals of the tournament.

Spain are looking to be called footballs top nation once again.

Having ruled the roost winning this tournament twice in a row (2008 and 2012) and the 2010 World Cup in between, their greatest generation grew old.

A few disasters followed but Real Madrid keep winning, Barcelonas academy keeps producing as do Spanish managers with five of the best in the EPL.

They could be crowned kings of Europe again very soon.

Best coach Ralph Rangnick United dud, Austria mastermind

Pity poor United fans.

No sooner did the club settle their managerial issue by sticking with Erik ten Hag than a ghost from the past comes back to haunt them.

Ralph Rangnick, widely considered the worst of the duds that have followed Fergie, reinvents himself as a mastermind of Austria.

The 65-year-old German has turned a bunch of no-hopers into table toppers and a force to be reckoned with.

And with a Round-of-16 tie against fellow outsiders Turkey, they could go deep into the tournament, being on the easy side of the draw.

Rangnick has also restored his own reputation from near laughing stock at United where he failed to get a tune out of Cristiano Ronaldo & Co.

Known as the Godfather of the Gegenpress, when he arrived at Old Trafford, he was given ringing endorsements by his compatriots, Jurgen Klopp and Thomas Tuchel.

Indeed, many felt the club had finally got the right man when he succeeded Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

But he was originally appointed as director of football, not manager, and only took over when the Norwegian was sacked.

He famously promised to perform open-heart surgery on the Red Devils, but they didnt wake from the anaesthetic.

Two wins in 10 games left Ronaldo distinctly unimpressed.

Deep inside me, I never saw him as the boss because I saw some points that I never agreed with, said the Portuguese.

But Austrias Marcel Sabitzer, who was on loan at United at the time, is fulsome with his praise today.

The midfielder says: It feels good to play in this team and I am really enjoying every day with the team and the staff.

We are now very strong against the ball, so everyone knows when we lose the ball, we have to switch and hunt it down.

Well, hunting down the ball was something CR7 was never going to do.

Rangnick himself has been hunted by Bayern Munich but turned them down.

It may be scant consolation to United fans, but he is probably better suited to international management United was his 13th club.

Best goal Nicolae Stanciu, the Vladiator impales Ukraine

Long-range artillery has been a welcome feature so far with little to choose between half a dozen spectacular strikes.

But based on what it did for the team (not to mention the headline), Nicolae Stancius for Romania against Ukraine gets the vote.

One of the favourites for an early exit, the Romanians were under the cosh until skipper Stanciu picked up a loose ball on the edge of the Ukraine penalty area and whipped a howitzer into the top corner.

Not only did it turn the game, but it also turned the tournament for Romania, who went on to win 3-0 and top their group.

It was their first win at a major championship for 24 years and belied predictions of cagey encounters reliant on a strong defence.

The goal also flipped the momentum of the match and Stanciu almost had a second from a corner that hit the bar.

But two more goals secured the countrys biggest ever European Championship win.

Ukraine were well and truly impaled.

Biggest Flop England must take the handbrake off

They are still in the tournament. They have topped their group. And theyve only conceded one goal from distance.

But and there are some pretty huge buts when it comes to the tournaments erstwhile favourites.

They are unwatchable. Too bad to be boring was one British newspaper headline.

And they are certainly not favourites now not even among their own fans.

They are turgid, stilted, negative we can throw the whole thesaurus at them and it would not do justice to their bumbling inadequacies.

They cant keep the ball. They cant press. They cant go forward. They cant pass. They cant shoot. The first decent team they meet will murder them.

Southgate must go! When it was rumoured that the England boss might be in line for the United job, a poll of fans revealed 93% against. It would be 100% now.

The players can play but not with the handbrake on, legs tied together and minds full of negativity.

At least thats what it looks like.
