Liverpool still knockin’ on heaven’s door

The Quad has gone; the Treble is just a bit closer.

Those are the bare facts of a rollercoaster week when Liverpool went to hell and back, and have now been stopped at the Pearly Gates.

After the shame of being back on the list of fallen FA Cup giants, they came within seconds of laying one hand on the EPL trophy.

A nine-point lead in mid-February would have seemed beyond Arsenal, reeling from the loss of Kai Havertz for the rest of the season.

And, in many eyes, it would have justified Arne Slots decision to give his first team last weekend off.

Defeat at Plymouth was the last thing on their minds in midweek as they held on to a precious 2-1 lead at Everton and heard the triumphant sound of their own anthem being sung.

Youll Never Walk Alone reverberated around the ground as the seconds ticked away on the final Merseyside derby at Goodison Park.

But Everton are nothing if not cussed neighbours and never more so than when they snatched a truly epic equaliser.

With the whistle to the referees lips, James Tarkowski blasted in one of the most dramatic goals ever scored at the historic ground.

It rattled Liverpools souls as hard as it hit the roof of the net.

The singing was drowned by a thunderous roar of relief from the home fans.

It was a fitting finale for Everton: Goodison was never going to go quietly.

But could it be historic in terms of the title race?

An even more cussed VAR intervention threatened to ruin a glorious moment but mercifully it let the goal stand.

A pitch invasion had already taken place; a riot might have followed.

As it was, red cards were brandished including one to the previously unflappable Slot.

Debate will rage over the goal Liverpool thought Konate was fouled in the build-up but just as Mo Salah should have had a freekick when thrown on goal earlier, nothing was given.

And VAR did nothing.

Liverpool will feel aggrieved but Everton deserved a point and so the two share 41 wins apiece in their rivalry on this ground that dates back to 1894.

The Reds anger would have been as much about being robbed of a statement victory as the decisions themselves.

Nine points would have been a cavernous gap for Arsenal to close.

Especially with yet another injury to a key player to cope with.

Seven is still a tall order.

That will teach them to buy a striker when they had the chance.

But Liverpool didnt buy one either they have a few and have been ultra careful in protecting the players they have.

The midweek clash was the first of five games in 15 days this month and Slot has been meticulous in managing their minutes.

Hence, he decided to spare the players the hassle of a 900km round trip to sit on the bench.

Critics have said he should at least have taken the big guns as insurance as Nottingham Forest did with theirs on the trip to Exeter and needed them to survive.

For Slot, it was a case of being damned if he did, and damned if he didnt.

And if Plymouth was a rude reminder that the squad may not be as deep as previously thought, it will bring a welcome respite to those hard-pressed players.

The silver lining is that the premature exit from the FA Cup will keep the players fresher for the chase for the EPL, Champions League and Carabao Cup.

And fears that Plymouth might have been the start of a slide have been allayed.

Although far from their best on Wednesday, at least they got a point in one of their trickiest fixtures.

The chances of landing all four trophies something that Liverpool have come close to twice in recent years was never really a thing and not talked about.

Besides missing the FA Cup fifth-round weekend at the start of March, Slots men will now play just four times in March both Champions League last-16 ties, a league game against Southampton and the League Cup final against Newcastle.

Next up though isnt a walk in the park Wolves, Man City, Aston Villa and Newcastle in the league.

Slot said before they went to the Southwest outpost, nothing is ever gained by losing a match but a reduction in a heavy workload is one.

It will still go down as Slots first big mistake, but he has the right to feel let down by his players.

They only really turned up for the nine added minutes but this is always the risk when the stars are left behind.

The message such a selection can be transformative to both squads.

Plymouth would have been doing handstands in the dressing room when they saw the team sheet, saying: We can beat these.

Liverpools would have been needing introductions to each other.

Slot overdid it, with academy kids among the fringe players but still there were seven internationals.

Klopp also underestimated the Pilgrims in 2017 but got away with a draw at Anfield and won the replay.

Already on the list of shame is: Worcester City 1 Liverpool 0 in 1959.

On the Richter Scale this was a bigger shock as Worcester were a non-league team although Liverpool themselves were in the second tier.

Often known as Liddellpool after their legendary Scottish forward Billy Liddell, they committed the cardinal sin of leaving him out for that game.

But the lining from this cloud was not mere silver it was solid gold.

Enter Bill Shankly after manager Phil Taylor was sacked and the rest is history.

But in 2005, Rafa Benitez forgot the lesson and lost to Burnley. But he would go on to pull off the Miracle of Istanbul that year.

So the portents are good after a disaster, Liverpool tend to bounce back. And of course, they are in a very different place to where they were in 1959 and 2005.

They could have done without the suspensions of Curtis Jones, Slot and his assistant Sipke Hulshoff against improving Wolves, but thats all Arsenal have to cling to.

For Liverpool, nine points would have been heaven; seven will have to do for now.

As Bob Dylan put it, they are still knockin on the door.
